Daily Update

3/12/12. Today was the first day of internships! I met my mentor Michael Krupa and many of the fire fighters I will be working with over the next three weeks. We did about an two hour orientation and he supplied me with my own Durango Fire and Rescue ID. After that and a lunch break we went to station 5 to look over damage from the break in this weekend and went and checked other fire stations near it for anything that was stolen or missing. That concluded our day and tomorrow I am working with fire inspection.

3/13/12 Today I shadowed Steve Harris a fire inspector for Durango Fire& Rescue. We inspected 6 buildings to make sure they were up to fire code and I also sat in on a renovation meeting for the south city market. I had a lot of fun doing this and my mentor Steve had a great sense of humor making working with him very enjoyable!

3/14/12 Today I filed a lot of paper work for the fire department and got the privilege of shadowing a meeting with BP at one of there gas drilling well heads with Fire Chief Karola Hanks and Haz Mat Division Chief Mark Quick to look at some signs at the sight and how to revise them. I even gave some input that will be used to redesign the signs BP uses!

3/15/12 Today I tested out new fire alarms at TJMAX in the main mall filed paper work and did an inspection on some apartment buildings. I enjoyed working at the TJMAX was kinda cool to see it before it opens and its always fun to set off super loud alarms and have radio communication.

3/16/12  Today I filed paper work from 745 to about 11:00 then we ran a quick inspection where durango music used to be then after lunch I went to River View and did an inspection there and that concluded my week with fire prevention!

3/19/12 Today I shadowed the Firefighters and EMTs at station 1. Nothing really eventful happened we did a few non emergency transports and  truck checks and that was about it. On an unrelated note i learned that the Broncos signed Payton Manning. A lot of the firefighters were pretty excited about that.

3/20/12 Today not a lot happened, I did training with the Firemen and worked out with them. We did the training pretty much all day the first few hours of training were going over major EMS calls they had received in the pas few months and seeing what they did well on and what could be improved. The last part of training was going over a structure fire they had fought early Monday morning and seeing how they as a team had responded to that call.

3/21/12 Today i responded to a patient with a seizure and a four car pile up out at the intersection just past Walmart. It was the first car accident i got to respond to so that for me was very exciting. I also got filmed by Zach and Cooper and was visited by Rachael.  Be sure to check out my photo section to see photos of the crash and me in full fire gear!

3/22/12 Today was pretty quite. We did one non emergency transport from Mercy to the airport for Flight  For Life. I sat in on some case reviews I had previously reviewed earlier this week and I also worked out a bit.

3/23/12 Today was the last day at station 1. We had two calls one was an elderly man who had trouble standing. We arrived on scene and couldnt find anything wrong so we transported him to Mercy. While at Mercy we were asked to transport a Flight For Life patient to the airport which we did but took up most of our day. Next Monday I will be at station 2 downtown.

3/26/12 Today I started at station two. I got to know everyone and saw Austin for a few minutes. We got two calls one canceled fire call and a 60 year old female experiencing shortness of breath and chest pain. We arrived on scene determined her to be stable got her in the ambulance where i got to help put on the monitor which was pretty cool. We took her to the ER then went back to station 2.

3/27/12 Today was a very busy day. I did my mentor interview, got to put on full fire gear including an air mask and do PT in that. Then after lunch we tested a hydrant out on 160 then from there we looked at a trailer park to determine its layout. While there we received a medical call for a elderly man who was having a problem with diabetes and other complications. we arrived on scene determined him to be stable so we transported him to mercy.

3/28/12 Today was pretty quite we got a call that someone smelled gas on 11th st street and 3rd ave we went and checked it out but couldnt find anything. We were called back an hour later so we called the gas company so they could find the leak. Other then that I did training and saw Steve for a little while in the afternoon.

3/29/12 Today was last day of internships. I got two calls one was to the smell of gas on 11th st and 3 av we again did not find anything and turned it over to Atmos energy. We also got a call for a male drunk and passed out on a park bench. He was to drunk to take to detox so we took him to Mercy instead. I had lunch with Michael Krupa Brock and Austin then we got to get some fire gear, light a flare and take photos. We als climbed up the 75 foot ladder.
